Erythropoietin alfa is a 165-amino acid erythropoiesis stimulating glycoprotein manufactured by recombinant DNA technology. Recombinant human erythropoietin (r-HuEPO) is a purified glycoprotein, produced from mammalian's cells into which the gene coding for human erythropoietin has been inserted. It has a molecular weight of approximately 30,400 Daltons and the product contains the identical amino acid sequence of isolated natural erythropoietin.
Erythropoietin is indicated for the treatment of-
• Anemia associated with Chronic Renal Failure, including patients on dialysis and patients not on dialysis.
• Anemia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies where anemia is because of concomitantly administered chemotherapy.
• Anemic patients (hemoglobin >10 to <= 13g / d * L) scheduled to undergo elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions.
• Anemia related to therapy with zidovudine in HIV-infected patients.
