Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thereby blocking DNA replication and leading to bacterial cell death. It is highly effective against both gram-positive organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, with moderate activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as atypical pathogens like Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, and Legionella.
Clinically, it is widely used for respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and sinusitis), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections. The hemihydrate form improves the drug’s stability and formulation without altering its pharmacological activity.
